Taarma was born on a winter night in 1999 in the land of the Afghans, but remained silent until 2003, when its first demo was recorded at the “Black Dungeon” studio and eventually crossed the border of obscurity in 2005.
Taarma in the ancient Brahui language means darkness. This kind of expression does not exist in this part of the world. The Taarma project originates from the vast land and mountains of Balochistan (bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan, near Iran) — a place unfamiliar with such hateful sounds.
Black Emperor Jogezai is the founder of this group in the world of metal music and this subgenre. Taarma represents a form of hateful music connected to a genre called Depressive Black Metal, linking to suffering and screams. Taarma’s lyrics are mostly based on death, winter, depression, and human despair.
To blend the concept of darkness, the hatred of emotion, and to unite darkness with blood, Taarma must sacrifice its art until the end of existence. Black Emperor sends his regards to the demons and seeks companionship for Taarma.
After the first demo titled “Demo I”, Black Emperor Jogezai recorded the second demo the following year, titled “Sorrow of My Ancestral Spirits”, and immediately began working on the next demo, “Demo II”, which was recorded in the following months.
The fourth demo, “Funeral Rehearsal Tape”, was recorded and released in the fall of that same year (2006). Taarma decided to record an EP titled “In Death I Submerge”, and spent the winter of 2006 working on this new project.
Suffering Jesus Productions offered Taarma a deal, which Taarma made good use of and signed the contract. In the early months of the new year, work began on an album titled “Remnants of a Tormenting Black Shadow”, which can be considered Taarma’s first full-length album, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Western bands. The album even includes a cover of a song by Xasthur, showcasing Taarma’s professional work.
The next demo was “Blades of Despair”. In this demo, a powerful and well-crafted track called “Suffering a Sickening Death” stands out — strong in execution, lyrics, and music — released in March 2007.
After the success and positive reception of this album and the previous demo, Taarma decided to collaborate with a friend in Hungary to release a split of their new works. The band Dér was the group with which Taarma released the Split Album, showing the band’s consistent progress.
Thus, to this day, Taarma has established itself in the realm of Depressive Black Metal with a solid portfolio and tracks like “Suffering a Sickening Death” and “A Beautiful Shadow of Sadness”.
Despite the limited resources available to Taarma, along with security issues, war, political turmoil, and restrictions that have weighed heavily on the project, these very pressures have contributed to the creation of hateful and deathly works, proving that there is a place for this band in the world of black metal.
Taarma has distributed all its demos as hand-copied editions, usually limited to five to ten copies, shared among fans of the band — and it has received a positive response. Taarma has also been active in the group Black Arts and continues to work hard on creating new works.
Only sorrow is real…
